Dental Implants and Oral Rehabilitation

Implantology is the area of dental medicine dedicated to the rehabilitation of missing teeth, by placing implants – pieces made of titanium and zirconia which function as an artificial root to support bridges or crowns.

This is the treatment we recommend when there is a total or partial loss of our patients’ teeth. In these cases, our goal is to restore the basic functions of phonetics, occlusion and mastication. Fortunately, advances in medicine allow us to combine this functionality with natural and harmonious aesthetics, giving our patients back the pleasure and desire to smile.

In cases where there has been a total loss of teeth in at least one of the jaws, it is now possible, with the “Teeth in a day” solution, to create, within 24 hours, a new, more harmonious smile that meets the expectations and physiognomy of each patient.

Our goal is to create a lasting, complete solution for tooth loss, restoring function, comfort, and smile aesthetics.

FAQ about Dental Implants:

No, at the Clínica Cerejeira e Leão any treatment that may cause discomfort to the patient is always accompanied by anesthesia. In more complex and lengthy treatments it is possible to use conscious sedation allowing the patient to be more relaxed and comfortable during the treatment.

Inhalational conscious sedation is extremely safe, allowing the patient to maintain his alertness and respond to simple instructions, with the added advantage that its effect disappears as soon as the appointment is over, making it more comfortable for the patient after the treatment.

Yes, nowadays we have unique regeneration techniques in dentistry, through new grafting materials that allow vertical and horizontal bone augmentation, in order to correct defects that previously could make implant placement impossible.

At the Clínica Dentária Cerejeira e Leão we use world reference dental implants, which we combine with the best and most effective technologies available in the market.

The dental implants are made of high quality titanium or zirconium, a biocompatible material, which with time will integrate with the bone. This union allows the anchorage of the implant in the bone to be strong and durable for new teeth, which will translate into a stable dentition.

With dental implants there are no more problems related to chewing, and they also allow for better hygiene, similar to that of a natural dentition.

The process of placing implants is quick, painless and very simple, and can take the normal time for a dental appointment, depending obviously on the number of implants placed, for example the placement of implants in one arch can take 2 hours when performing the “Teeth in a day” treatment.

After the placement of the fixed prosthesis, the results can be quite long-lasting, exceeding 10 years when all the care and recommendations offered by the dentist are taken into account.

To ensure that the treatments are as long-lasting as possible, while maintaining functional and aesthetic effects, we recommend a combination of daily maintenance performed by the patient, and regular maintenance, which must be performed by the referring dental hygienist every 6 months.

It is also very important that every patient understands that in some cases implants fail and need to be removed.

Studies have continuously shown that implants have a high survival rate. However, implants are a medical device; we must remember that no medical device guarantees a 100% success rate, and in this case dental implants perform similarly.

In addition, there are many risk factors that can have adverse effects on the implant survival rate:

– patient’s medical history (patient with motor difficulties, taking bisphosphonates, cancers, autoimmune diseases, etc.)

– history of periodontal disease

– iatrogenic factors

– poor oral hygiene.

While we cannot guarantee the success of a medical device, the vast majority of patients can expect a minimum of five to 10 years of function or more with a high success rate.

To prevent the loss of an implant it is important to maintain routine appointments with the referring hygienist, dental/implant care is to be maintained throughout life and the patient cannot neglect their hygiene. The maintenance program consists of 2 stages:

1- Daily maintenance – done at home using hygiene materials (brushing, dental floss, tongue scraper, brush, floss, water jet, mouthwash, toothpaste).

2- Periodic Maintenance – must be done by the dentist / oral hygienist every 6-6 months

  • Unscrewing the screws that connect the definitive fixed prosthesis to the implants themselves (the crown starts to wobble).
  • Bacterial plaque and tartar.
  • Loss of bone insertion associated with infection: Peri-implantitis.
  • Wear and/or fracture of the prosthesis and/or components.
  • Normal biological changes at bone and soft tissue level (gums) that lead to a reformulation of the adaptation of the definitive structures to the gums.

Taking care of your teeth/implants is a bit like doing sports, if you persist you will soon achieve visible results.

The use of removable prosthetics is a treatment that is falling out of favor as prosthetics cause a lot of discomfort in most patients, altering diction and leading to bone loss.

The use of dental implants and fixed prosthetic pieces will help you feel more comfortable.
